Pay Scales and allowances

Pay Scales and allowances

Teacher pay and benefits are hot topics at the moment. With the pressure on to keep fees down all schools are having to review their largest cost – teaching staff. Many schools use lengthy and outdated pay scales or systems of allowance payments which have grown unchecked over time and which contain many anomalies. However, to tackle these areas effectively schools want accurate comparative data.

Baines Cutler has unique knowledge of the pay and benefit arrangements in use in the independent schools’ sector. Our ground-breaking Teacher Salary and Benefits Surveys examine this area in detail for the first time and we hold comparative data on pay and benefits for Heads, Bursars, SMT members, Heads of Department, Housemasters and representative teacher roles across a very wide range of senior schools. The survey included pay levels, pay scales, teacher age profiles, allowances, accommodation and other benefits, contact time remissions, teacher duties and staff fee remissions. An example of the report provided to participant schools can be downloaded here. The survey was repeated in 2013/14 and was this time extended to junior schools.  This second survey looked more closely at the accommodation benefits provided to teaching staff, as well as looking at the pay awarded to high level support staff.

Since carrying out the surveys we have been asked to work with many schools to assist in reviewing their pay scales, allowances and benefits. Our work has included work for top schools, both day and boarding and we have carried out more work for more leading schools in this area than any other firm.
