Business Planning

With growing pressures on school finances many schools are reviewing and revising their business plans and are wondering how optimistic they can afford to be on pupil numbers, fee increases and capital projects. Schools need better financial models which have good sensitivity analysis and show the links between surpluses and cash-flows. They also want to be able to benchmark their assumptions and get informed independent advice to both support and challenge their plans.

Baines Cutler has unique knowledge of schools’ business planning. Through our financial benchmarking surveys we have access to detailed information on nearly every major UK school over the last 20 years and our customised benchmarking service allows us to flex the results by size and type of school and by UK region to compare our clients’ results solely against peer schools. Tim Baines has been the leading school’s audit partner in the UK over the last 10 years and he has acted for schools of all sizes and types, including many of the UK’s very top schools. We therefore have unique knowledge about how schools approach business planning.

In working with our clients on validating and challenging their business plans we have developed a planning model which allows us to carry out detailed projections, linking them to cash flows and sensitivity assumptions. We then use our benchmarking work to comment and critique plans to help governors and senior management understand the issues and risks. We then work with our clients to develop action plans and to take informed decisions.
