Independent Schools Financial Benchmarking Survey 2017

Posted: Tuesday 23 May 2017

The 2017 edition of the Independent Schools Financial Benchmarking Survey, published by Baines Cutler in association with Crowe Clark Whitehill LLP is now available.

This year’s survey contains information on the key issues of fee affordability and parental earnings and, based on survey returns from over 12,000 parents, we show how knowledge of a school’s parental earnings profile helps Governors decide on appropriate fees and bursary strategies. We comment on the Government’s Education Green Paper in relation to Public Benefit and propose a new model which highlights the minority of schools which can (and probably should) do more and compares them with the majority of schools which are already doing enough, or cannot do more and remain viable financially.

This year we conducted our detailed 3-yearly survey of teacher pay and, for the first time, extended it to workload. This has allowed us to see how many hours teachers are actually in the classroom and the other ways in which they spend their time. With the affordability of low pupil teacher ratios and class sizes being possibly the greatest financial challenge the sector will face in the next 10 years, this data gives important insights. We then take our usual look at the economic climate, pupil numbers and fees and on the cost side we look at teacher pay, support costs and capital expenditure. We examine fundraising and trading as schools seek to raise money elsewhere.

We hope you find the report useful in addressing your own school’s finances and issues. Please see the Publications page of the web-site for details of how to obtain additional copies.  Please note that you can also order a soft copy licence which will not only allow you to make the report available to all SMT or governors but includes access to all the individual graphs and tables as JPEG’s for use in presentations.

As usual we are able to supply customised benchmark reports providing mean, median and spread data for all key ratios, together with 10 year trend data against a set peer group. If you would like further information do let us know.
